He did well with his ninja training, but rather than find interest in the family's criminal activities, Genji would rather pursue a playboy life. Seeing him as a liability, it was after their father's death that Genji's differences with his older brother, Hanzo, led to a fight that nearly cost Genji his life. Genji was saved by Overwatch and Dr. Angela "Mercy" Ziegler, replacing much of his body with cybernetic parts that enhanced his already amazing agility. He worked as part of Blackwatch for some time. Following Overwatch, Genji was at war with himself until he met the Omnic monk, Zenyatta, as he was wandering the world. Under Zenyatta's mentorage, Genji eventually found inner peace.
